Cassels came from a Huguenot family which settled in Hesse Kassel in Germany, he first came to Ireland in 1728 to work on a project in Fermanagh, he was discovered by Lord Burlington who introduced him to his circle of friends, he soon became one of the most sought after architects in Ireland

He greatly influenced the development of Anglo Irish architecture during the Georgian period. Among his greatest works are Russborough and Powerscourt in County Wicklow, Westport House in County Mayo, Newbridge in Dublin and Stokestown House in Roscommon. His style was Palladian with heavy mouldings and sculptured stonework.
